Focus on Art

Now showing the landscapes of William Stevens.

With a 50 year career in the graphic arts industry, Bill's interest in art continually developed. After retirement, Bill moved to Muskoka and devoted all of his spare time developing his skills and technique.
Being immersed in the beauty of Muskoka forest and lakes, Bill's appreciation of changing seasons motivated him to concentrate on landscape painting using oils on canvas.

“My art allows me to capture and record the beauty of nature and the blending of various colours. The challenge of creating or recreating the scenes I have experienced gives me meaning.

Vision Therapy
Vision therapy is a service to help people improve visual skills and abilities, especially for people with learning or reading difficulties, people who have suffered trauma or brain injury, and elite athletes looking for a performance edge. It involves in office therapy visits over the course of several weeks to months and customized home vision exercises. There is no other clinic in or near Barrie offering this kind of specialized vision care also called behavioral optometry.

The first step of this therapy is a consultation with Dr. Schell to discuss the difference between good visual acuity and having a vision problem. In this consultation, Dr. Schell will demonstrate the effects of a vision problem and assess visual efficiency. Subsequent testing further determines a diagnosis and the best course of action for treatment.

Visual Skills Evaluation
The Visual Skills Evaluation consists of nine tests for binocular/accommodative disorders; eye movement testing; and visual performance posture tests. These standardized optometric tests determine how the visual system might be compromised during visual tasks, such as reading and computer work.

Visual Perception Testing
Visual Perception Testing includes a series of standardized tests that assess such skills as visual discrimination, visual memory, visual motor integration and letter/number reversal tendency, among others. This examination aids in helping those who have learning or reading difficulties. It is also a part of an evaluation for brain injury patients or anyone interested in determining their visual potential.

Contact Lenses Fitting
Contact lenses are an excellent alternative to spectacle correction. Dr. Schell is skilled at fitting all types of contact lens corrections, ranging from single vision, astigmatism, multifocal and custom made prescriptions. We carry all the latest brands and have complete access to products. We also sell contact lens solution and moisture drops. From first time wearers to experienced wearers looking for better performance, we can help them all.

Digital Fundus Photography
This highly specialized camera shows a detailed image of the retina, the optic nerve, blood vessels, nerve fibre layer and the macula. It can show an abnormality that may threaten normal vision and aids Dr. Schell’s ability to accurately diagnose and document eye disease. It also provides a baseline for comparison for future visits and response to therapy.

Our friendly technician will have you sit comfortably in front of the camera with your chin and forehead in a guide. The camera will be aimed first in one eye then the other. Dilation drops may be used if necessary. The picture is then saved in your permanent clinical records and is immediately available for Dr. Schell to show, allowing you to become more involved in your eye care.

Laser Surgery Co-management
We are able to provide expert advice and counseling for individuals considering refractive surgery to eliminate the dependency on glasses or contact lenses for clear vision. Dr. Schell had successful Lasik surgery in 2007. He has experience from both sides of surgery, as a doctor monitoring and counseling and as a patient whose vision was transformed. Our clinic is able to provide pre-operative and post-operative management.

Dry Eye Therapy
Dry Eye is a condition in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and protect the eye. This can be a chronic condition and is caused by having poor quality or poor production of tears.
In the initial consultation, Dr. Schell evaluates all sources of dry eye and recommends the best treatment which can include artificial tears, punctal plugs, omega 3 therapy, warm compresses and lid massage as well as counseling on hygiene, water consumption and nutritional supplements.
